How To Make Soda Bread Without Eggs & Yeast in 2023?
“How To Make Soda Bread at home” is question for every cook. Breads are like babies they require constant care, attention, time and love. What if I told you? there is a bread that is less needy and only requires love. Love and a few more ingredients are enough to make this Soda Bread.
Today I am making a Irish Soda Bread, which uses very few ingredients and I am going to flavor it with Cumin and Black Pepper. The best part about this bread is there is no proofing time and no yeast required.
Soda Bread Without Eggs & Yeast
Let’s begin. I am starting with All Purpose Flour or Maida, Salt, for flavoring I am adding Cumin and Black Pepper. Next I am adding in Soda, Because of the Cumin and Black Pepper, when you slice in the bread you will be able to see small black spots in it and that will make it look really nice.
Now the most important thing about Soda is do not add too much, thinking your bread will rise more if you add a lot of Soda. First thing, it won’t taste nice it will be very soapy when you eat it and second thing would be it will turn green in color which is something that you don’t want. So make sure you add only enough soda for the bread.
Next I am going to add in Butter. And I am now going to crumble this Butter into the flour. Crumbling the Butter ensures that your bread is soft and crumbly when you eat it and not very dense. Time to turn this into a dough I am adding in Butter Milk and I am going to save a little for brushing later.
Using a fork I am just going to mix this. And now that the dough is a little shaggy, I am going to knead it with my hands not knead it knead it but just bring it together.
Within a few seconds the dough has come together. Now I am going to remove it on my table and just shape it. There are a few cracks but I am not going to worry too much about it. I am just turning this into a round shape. I am happy with the shape so I am going to place it on my tray lying with parchment paper.
If it’s sticky, it’s going to be really soft. Time to top this off with a few Oats but to make sure that the Oats stick to my bread I am going to brush it with a bit of Butter Milk. Now time to sprinkle some Oats. I am using normal quick Oats, you can also use rolled Oats, if you want.
Tap it a little to make sure it sticks properly and now we are going to score the bread with the cross on top. Make sure you are using a very sharp knife when you do this so that you don’t drag your dough outside.
Now the reason why we make this cross so that your bread doesn’t crack while baking. Remember there is Soda and Butter Milk in this it’s already started reacting and has become very very soft. This is going to rise in the oven and it may crack if there is no cross on top.
Now I am going to bake this at 200°C for ten minutes first. After ten minutes, I am going to turn down the oven temperature to 180°C and bake for ten more minutes or till the bread sounds hollow. Let me bake this.
You will know your Bread is ready when it sounds hollow. If you can’t handle the heat, use a cloth to pick up your Bread now we will let this cool completely. This is the best Bread you can make at home when you don’t have yeast. It uses super simple ingredients.
You can add any ingredients of your choice to flavour this like Nuts, Dry Fruits or Seeds even. Before you go, let’s slice and look inside. The slices are speckled with Cumin and Black Pepper. Enjoy this with lots of Butter Try this recipe out and let me know how it turns out in the comments below I will see you next time.

Q: What makes it soda bread?
Soda bread is a type of bread that is made with flour, buttermilk, and baking soda as leavening agents, rather than yeast. It is a quick bread, meaning that it does not require time to rise like traditional bread made with yeast. Soda bread is traditionally made with a combination of wholemeal flour and white flour, and it is known for its slightly dense and moist texture. The buttermilk and baking soda react to create carbon dioxide gas, which helps the bread to rise. Soda bread is a popular bread in Ireland and is often served with meals or as a snack.
Q: Is soda bread a healthy bread?
Soda bread is a type of bread that is made using baking soda as a leavening agent, rather than yeast. While it is a quick and easy bread to make, it may not be as nutritious as other types of bread that are made with whole grains and contain fewer additives.
Soda bread is typically made with all-purpose flour, which is a refined grain that has had the bran and germ removed. This means that it is lower in fiber and nutrients than whole grain breads. Soda bread may also contain other ingredients, such as sugar and butter, which can add extra calories and fat.
Overall, soda bread is not a particularly healthy bread option compared to other types of bread that are made with whole grains and fewer additives. It is best to choose breads that are made with whole grains, such as whole wheat, rye, or oats, as these types of breads are higher in fiber and nutrients.
Q: What’s the difference between soda bread and Irish soda bread?
Soda bread is a type of quick bread that is made with baking soda as a leavening agent, rather than yeast. It is a simple bread that can be made with just a few ingredients, including flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk. Soda bread is popular in many countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom.
Irish soda bread, on the other hand, is a specific type of soda bread that is traditionally made in Ireland. It is a round loaf that is made with flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk. It is often made with a mixture of whole wheat flour and white flour, and it may also include ingredients such as raisins or caraway seeds. Irish soda bread has a distinctive flavor and a dense, moist texture. It is a staple of Irish cuisine and is often served with butter or as part of a traditional Irish breakfast.
Q: Is soda bread and sourdough the same?
No, soda bread and sourdough bread are not the same. Soda bread is a type of quick bread that is made with baking soda as a leavening agent, while sourdough bread is made with a fermented mixture of flour and water known as a sourdough starter. Sourdough bread takes longer to rise and has a distinctive sour flavor, while soda bread is generally less sour and has a more dense, moist texture.
